Full Face Snorkel Information

Full Face Snorkel Mask vs Traditional Mask

Why are people running towards full face snorkel masks these days? Well mainly because it is a much easier way of breathing underwater. You can breathe through both your nose and your mouth which allows you to breathe easy.  Full Face Snorkel masks are best for recreational diving and are particularly great for beginner snorkelers who have a hard time getting used to traditional snorkel masks and snorkeling sets.

best full face snorkel

Traditional snorkel masks can be uncomfortable , leak and the viewing area can fog up.Full Face Snorkel Masks do not always have this problem because the viewing chamber and the breathing chamber are seperated.

Traditional masks can however be advantageous for those who like to take longer dives underwater. Most full face snorkel masks are not made for such so any extended dives would be best kept with traditional masks.

A Full Face Snorkel Mask is best for you if:

  • You are a recreational/ leisure snorkeler
  • You like me, hate having your nose sealed off from your mouth
  • You will be mostly surface snorkeling
  • You will be doing short dives
  • You have a moustache
  • You are introducing kids to snorkeling
  • Snorkeling in Calm Waters

A Traditional mask is best for you if:

  • You are used to Traditional Snorkel Masks
  • You like taking extended longer dives
  • Equalization is far better with good quality traditional masks
  • Long Distance Swimming
  • Snorkeling in Rougher waters
  • You are Exercising

I recommend you try both and decide which is best for you!

The Anatomy of a Full Face Snorkel Mask

Here is a Picture of What parts do what and are associated with full face snorkel masks

How to pick the best size full face snorkel mask

This is a particularly important step to find which one is the best fit for you. To do this go take a look at the manufacturers sizing guide. Full Face Snorkel Masks are made to fit 90% of the population with standard face sizes. Unfortunately not all the manufacturers have sizes that can fit everyone outside that 90%. Also cheaper brands will be tougher to get a seal on, more on that later though. Here are some of the sizes of the top 5 Full Face Snorkel Masks we listed.

Triborg (SUBEA):

  • If < 12 cm (4 3/4″), choose size S/M
  • If > 12 cm (4 3/4″), choose size ML.

Sea View 180:

  • If < 4.7″ Choose the Smaller Size
  • If > 4.7″ Choose the Large Size

Whats the Best Price Range to Look at When getting a Full Face Snorkel?

Full Face Snorkel Masks are gear I recommend that you do not cheap out on.  There are a lot of different types of knock offs that have a great looking price but will perform terribly. If you stick with these top 5 manufactures you will be getting a good quality snorkel that can seal properly

Facial hair?

best full face snorkel

I hate to break it to you but if you really want to go snorkeling with a full face snorkel you may have to shave that beard. This is because hair creates small air pockets which will cause leakage problems when snorkeling. Sorry Brent Burns :(

Frequently Asked Questions about Full Face Snorkel Sets

What’s a Dry Top Snorkel ?

A Dry Top snorkel is where the Top of the SNorkel has a hollow ball in the inside. When you dive down, the ball hits the top of the snorkel and stops water from getting into the face passage.  If it does get into the snorkel the water is channels along into the inner section of the snorkel to the side of your mask which is separated from the breathing passage. As soon as you rise to the surface the water drains out.

Can Children use Full Face Snorkel Masks?

Yes they can, infact it will be easier for them to get used to a full face snorkel then a traditional one. I would advise not using these masks for exercising such as laps in the pool or diving.

Can you talk or breathe underwater?

Unfortunately not. It still acts as a traditional snorkel in the sense that you have to take your breaths when the snorkel valve is above water.  You can theoretically talk but it will be muffled because sound does not travel the same way underwater as it does above air.

Can I Dive Underwater?

You can, but I would not use full face snorkel masks for that specific use. If you are diving avoid duck diving( A Complete Vertical Dive). This is because they dry top snorkel may let some water in because it is positioned horizontally while you duck dive. As a result it will let some water in.  The device will work much better when it is horizontal

I Have Heard of some problems with these Full Face Snorkel Masks in the Past?

The jury is still out on this one as full face snorkel masks are still relatively new. A quote from Maui news

What I would advise though is to use a full face snorkel mask for its intended use.  and make sure you are in a group, in calm waters without a current and take off your mask every once and a while just to insure you get some fresh air.

“We’re not sure if the increase in incidents involving these new full-face type masks is related to a problem with this design or if there is just more people using this type over the traditional two-piece snorkel set.”“For us as a committee, to say full-faced snorkel masks are dangerous, we are not at that point yet. Because we don’t have the data to back it up. Yes, we had some incidents where people drowned. We have some incidents people had nonfatal (cases) with the one-piece masks. (But) the majority of drowning deaths is with the traditional two-piece.”

Conclusion

Depending on your use, you can choose from the best full face snorkelers in the market. If you want the best snorkeler, go for the Tribord Easybreath. If you want a snorkeler that is as good but a little cheaper then go for the SeaView Full Face Snorkeling Mask. If you wear glasses then go for the Ocean Reef Aria Full Face Snorkel Mask. If you want a mask to take when you are traveling for holidays then the foldable X-Lounger Full Face Snorkel Mask is a great option.
